God Possession Questionnaires from Raven & K. Filan

Please Circulate!

These questionnaires will be used for research on a book currently being written by Raven Kaldera (northern-tradition Pagan shaman) and Kenaz Filan (Voudoun houngan si pwen) on the growing phenomenon of god-possession and spirit-possession in parts of the Neo-Pagan demographic. All names will be kept confidential unless otherwise indicated. If you have questions, please email us at cauldronfarm@hotmail.com.

God-Possession Questionnaire #1:
For Pagans who have experienced god-possession or spirit-possession.

Name:
Preferred name for book:
Mailing address (for release form):
Email:

1) Please describe your spiritual path and tradition, if any.

2) Please describe the times that you have experienced spirit-possession or god-possession. Take as much space as you need to describe them. If there are too many to list - i.e. you're regularly a horse - please give an overview of what it is that you do.

3) Please describe the Gods or spirits who ride you. How is the ride different for different ones?

4) Why do you do it? Is it consensual or nonconsensual? Is it a choice for you? Could you stop? Do you have choices about where and when?

5) What is the experience of being ridden like for you? Describe the steps from beginning to end, when you come out of it.

6) Have you done this work as part of group ritual? As part of a deity "visiting" a client and giving advice? Randomly or accidentally? If the latter, did it ever go badly?

7) Do you feel that being ridden works better with a "ground crew" of people, or have you not historically needed that?

8) What advice would you give to someone who is finding this happening to them?

9) What advice would you give to someone who is an unexpected observer?

10) What is your relationship to the Gods or spirits who ride you?

11) Where does spirit-possession fit into your religious worldview?

12) The phenomenon of god-possession, especially with Western deities, is growing steadily in many Neo-Pagan groups. How do you feel about that?

13) What do you think that the Pagan demographic needs to know most about god-possession?

14) Do you think that anyone can learn to horse a god? If not, why not? If so, how?

15) Should spirit-possession be taught to anyone who wants to do it? What are the contra-indications?

16) How do you feel about the various "technologies" springing up to help people who have never before heard of god-possession to become horses? (Such as a group psychically condensing the soul and pulling the deity through, using trance states, etc.?)

17) In your experience, what's the difference between these terms: Horsing. God-Possession. Spirit-Possession. "Drawing Down." Aspecting. Channeling. Which would you say that you have done?

18) Anything else you'd like us to keep in mind?

God-Possession Questionnaire #2:
For Pagans who have observed god-possession or spirit-possession in a ritual or religious setting.

Name:
Preferred name for book:
Mailing Address (for release form):
Email:

1) Describe the situation(s) in which you have seen god-possession or spirit-possession.

2) What gods or spirits were doing the possessing? How fully, in your opinion, was the individual(s) possessed?

3) In your opinion, was the possession(s) you saw real, delusional, or faked?

4) Was the possession experience expected by the audience? By the ritual facilitators? By the person being possessed?

5) What could have been done to better prepare you, and the rest of the audience, for the possession?

6) What did seeing the possession teach you?

7) Did the deity or spirit interact with you or other members of the audience?

8) What message do you think was communicated to the audience? (About your religion, about the religions of others, about the community, about spirit-possession in general, or anything else you can think of?)

9) Would you go to a ritual which was advertised to have structured god-possession? Why or why not?

10) How would you describe your religious tradition or spiritual path, if any?

11) Where does spirit-possession fit into your religious worldview?

12) The phenomenon of god-possession, especially with Western deities, is growing steadily in many Neo-Pagan groups. How do you feel about that?

13) Do you think that anyone can learn to horse a god? If not, why not? If so, how?

14) Should spirit-possession be taught to anyone who wants to do it? What are the contra-indications?

15) How do you feel about the various "technologies" springing up to help people who have never before heard of god-possession to become horses? (Such as a group psychically condensing the soul and pulling the deity through, etc.?)

16) Anything else you'd like us to keep in mind?

I'm sharing these with my students. I will gather up any responses they give me (plus mine) and send them as a kit.

Yes - for which I thank you - although to read it from the community page I had to download another browser, which crashes my computer, thus the lack of any intro post so far.

I will definitely pass this questionnaire on to my other Heathen and Pagan friends, especially to those also attended this year's Between The Worlds queer men's Pagan gathering in southeastern Ohio last month. There were quite a few god and spirit possessions which happened there during that week.

If you have experienced and observed, do you fill out both?

(I mean, "have done" usually implies "have seen", but I know a couple corner cases...)

Fill out the observer questions if you have observed someone else doing posession. If you've both seen it done and done it yourself, you can fill out both.

Hmmm. Interesting idea for a project. Just be aware that for some of us, our oaths do not allow us to discuss these things in more than VERY general terms, and you are dealing here with some things that are regarded by certain folks as among THE central Mysteries of the work they do. Reading the questionnaire felt very jarring to me. I guess now I know how the medicine man in the village feels when the perky anthropologist comes in from the faraway country and wants to know ALL about his spirits, herbs, and such.

I also feel strongly that it is helpful to try and keep discrete the various vocabulary terms you use to describe the spectrum of experiences we see when the human and divine realms of awareness intermingle (trying to come up with a phrase here that covers EVERYTHING--not easy!). For example, I feel that Aspecting, Spirit Mediumship, and Possession represent three VERY different kinds of experiences. As one Priest with whom I was speaking expressed recently, however, these things can be very difficult to pin down! In Voudoun so far as I know they have the most exacting tests for whether someone has the Lwa in them or not--it's very black and white. Another phenomenon which is even more difficult to describe in words is Overshadowing, which happens to some of us when we have sex and our lover/s "share space" with certain Beings.

Good Luck!

Obviously we wouldn't expect people to share oath-bound information. Truth be told, there are a good number of people who feel that a book like this oughtn't to be written. I do want to emphasize that the book isn't aimed at people who would like to do possessory work and want to learn how. It is for folks who *do* possessory work and would like to know how to do it better.

There is a saying that Lesser Mysteries must be carefully guarded, but the Greater Mysteries guard themselves. Secret names, oathbound drumbeats for god-calling, specific technologies -- these it makes sense to guard. We're not asking for that kind of information. Anyway, that would be a different book alltogether. But the Greater Mysteries can't be told. Or rather, if you could tell it, no one who didn't already know would understand.

It is useful to keep terminology clear, and that is why we want to know how people are using different terminology. We're trying to take a wide angle of "Describe what you are doing and what you call it." for the purposes of gathering information.

So far, pretty interesting.

I think it is pretty excellent, so far.

If you or R also wish to borrow it, I stumbled across _Posession Demonical & Other, Among Primitive Races, in Antiquity, the Middle Ages, and Modern Times_ by T.K. Oesterreich (first published in 19/21, & tr. to English in 1930 - to give context to "modern"). I know that Asphodel Press doesn't go in so much for footnotes, but you never know.

Bibliomancy writ large, I seem to be coming across weighty reading these days.

There is a saying that Lesser Mysteries must be carefully guarded, but the Greater Mysteries guard themselves.

I like this. There are words for this distinction in Greek. Aporrheton is something which you are forbidden to speak about (for instance, the details of the ritual at the Eleusinian Mysteries). Arrheton is something which is beyond words or description, which you cannot speak about even if you wanted to (for instance, the actual internal experience of the Eleusinian Mysteries).

Hello all
I know I was blogging about a lot of cash advance and payday loans, but I will never be able to stop blogging about it. Whenever I see that some Web site offers other services, I would compare them with the other and, finally, a blog about their benefits. This is the actual way to evaluate any service, too.
