Thai bodywork...?
As part of my upcoming program in Shiatsu, I'm taking classes in Thai bodywork to fulfill my Electives requirement. Thai bodywork, also sometimes called "Yoga Massage", largely involves the client laying flopped out on the floor, while you haul them through various contortions. It also involves getting very up close and personal, and sticking your feet (and knees, and elbows) in all sorts of sensitive places. Here are some pictures from the book I'm getting, linked from an article about the author (Kam Thye Chow) in "Massage & Bodywork Magazine". I think I might get arrested for the second one...

That looks really interesting. What are the benefits above and beyond "standard" massage work?

Well, it is a very different sort of treatment. Standard massage mostly kneads the muscles, and is best for treating problems related to muscles, skin, connective tissue, and circulation. The Thai bodywork mostly manipulates the joints, and is very good for improving flexibility and range of motion. Since it deals with energy imbalances, in theory it can benefit any health condition.

My housemate told me about Chinese massage, that it's not supposed to be relaxing and pleasant, it's supposed to be a quick repair and consequently it hurts like fuck. Apparently the benefit comes in the days after the actual massage. This looks sort of similar.

The specific style of Thai bodywork I'm learning is actually pretty gentle. It is supposed to give you a good stretch, but not be at all painful.
